On Friday, July 15, 2016, EnviroMINE, Inc. sponsored the Project Cornerstone Third Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos, CA.
The event raised funds to support local programs designed to educate the community about the importance of local construction aggregate resources (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone) used in building materials like asphalt and concrete.
Project Cornerstone's programs introduce students to the construction aggregates industry by incorporating hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into classroom activities and fieldtrips. The organization works with local high school Career Technical Education (CTE) programs to ensure the aggregates industry is included in their curriculum. They also provide informational presentations to local associations, community clubs, and planning groups.
The organization’s educational and community outreach efforts are changing the way communities view aggregates mining and the significant role it plays in our daily lives. For example, Project Cornerstone received the following feedback from a sixth grade teacher, “This industry should not hide, but broadcast its importance to our communities.” A Career and Technical Education Specialist said, “This industry is the best kept secret in East County.” Attitudes and perceptions change when the community is educated about the importance of a vibrant local construction aggregates industry.
Without financial support from the construction aggregates, mining and related industries, Project Cornerstone could not change the hearts and minds of our communities to embrace the aggregates industry for the value it brings to our everyday lives.
